Materials used for today’s medical devices, parts and pharmaceutical packaging contribute significantly to
performance and, in turn, to a patient’s health and well-being.
Consistency and reliability in those materials are
imperative for components designed to heal or even save lives.
Processing conditions can cause material properties to shift from the values stated in the information.

For brand owners
and OEMs to achieve this, they need materials free
of surface blooms and ready to stand up to everyday
wear and tear.
These new materials integrate excellent
aesthetics and functionality, including UV and
stain resistance, without sacrificing mechanical
properties.

Until now, silicone has been the only material for white or light-colored phone cases that resists staining
when in contact with blue jeans.

Avient has served the healthcare industry for decades with a full portfolio of innovative materials and services.
TEST METHOD
Fifteen bars of each material were placed into jigs at 1% and 2%
strain.

Aftermarket gun grips made with
materials such as silicone, rubber, or tape can typically
leave residue on a shooter’s hand.
These materials
can also deteriorate with ultraviolet (UV) and chemical
exposure from sunlight and cleaning.
Each tote holds a low-impact, disposable bladder
containing five drums worth of material.

This unique material is at
the heart of every product it makes.
THE SOLUTION
The team at Rolatube had a few non-negotiable
performance requirements when considering composite
material options for the tripod legs.
When deployed, the composite material
quickly unrolls to form rigid tubes that are strong,
stable, rugged, and weatherproof—providing the
ultimate user experience even in extreme conditions.

These high-performing materials deliver high-
temperature performance, mechanical integrity,
and excellent impact resistance for demanding
engine applications.
These robust materials also
incorporate heat stabilization to maintain tensile
strength and tensile elongation properties for long-
term thermal aging up to 120°C.

THE SOLUTION
Leveraging decades of experience creating customized
composite materials for archery bow limbs and other
high-performance applications, the engineers at Avient
worked closely with WillowWood’s special products
team to identify a solution.
Beyond material selection, the collaborative team also
identified a proprietary design and finishing process
that could be achieved with the tooling already in place
at WillowWood’s Ohio-based manufacturing facility.
THE IMPACT
Finding a material that could enable just the right
amount of flexibility as well as necessary stability
was critical to meet the needs of WillowWood’s target
market.

Density is measured in grams per cubic centimeters
(g/cc) with every 0.01 g/cc reduction resulting in less
material used.
A decrease in density of just 0.01–0.02 g/cc
can yield 4% annual savings in material consumption,
while generating a 4% increase in extruder productivity.
For example, in several instances processors ran Excelite
E-versions, which allowed longer production run times
and less material plate-out on extruder die lips.

Seeking to
create a more innovative and comfortable insole using
state-of-the-art materials, Gordon and his partner, Jeff
Milliman of Greenville Running Company, went to work.
The fiberglass material, which is less stiff
than carbon, proved to provide greater comfort and
gave the energy return they were looking for.
THE SOLUTION
After extensive research, Gordon found the material
that met his requirements: Avient’s Polystrand™
unidirectional thermoplastic tape.
