After taking part in a customer-day event at the Avient ColorWorks design and technology center in Milan, company founder Francesco Franceschetti was inspired and suggested a collaboration to conduct an exhaustive study of the Italian ski boot marketplace and the colors boot makers use in their products.

The carmaker’s design engineers brought in Avient to look at possible new approaches. Liking what they heard, the engineers decided to team up with Avient specialists in polymer distribution, colorants and additives to tackle the issue.

The supplier’s exploratory journey ended when they found Avient’s Onflex™ S TPE with UV stabilization. Global supplier DENSO, for example, was designing parts for an HVAC system and asked Avient to find a replacement for thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) material that would eliminate the need to pre-dry.

The manufacturer began working with Avient to find a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) solution to meet its dual requirements. Avient’s team recommended the use of overmolding (two-shot injection molding) to integrate the boot with the saw housing, and trialed several products before customizing a grade from its portfolio. Avient gathered detailed data from this customer’s production facility in Mexico and helped them calculate and compare the costs of the two solutions.
