HOW CHEMICALLY COMPATIBLE VERSAFLEX PKG TPEs MAKE THE DIFFERENCE
IN COSMETIC PACKAGING
Chemical compatibility – Versaflex PKG TPEs do
not discolor, etch, crack or delaminate when in
contact with most soaps, lotions, oils, surfactants
and solvents found in cosmetics.
https://www.avient.com/sites/default/files/2021-04/onflex-s-garden-hose-hand-grip-case-study.pdf
It required a high temperature
and a strong injection pressure to bond to the acrylonitrile-
butadienestyrene (ABS) substrate, which caused the resin
to deform.
Product developers reported that they needed a better TPE
to provide superior bonding performance with ABS without
requiring high temperature and pressure during 2K molding.
They recommended OnFlex-S™ K 65A-3E1709 multicomponent
TPE, which offers excellent adhesion to ABS and can be
molded at lower temperatures and injection pressures than
competitive products.
https://www.avient.com/sites/default/files/resources/Novel_Thermoplastic_Elastomers_with_Universal_Bonding_Characteristics.pdf
The substrates materials
employed for overmolding were PP, ABS, PC/ABS, polyester, Nylon and POM.
These TPEs
have exhibited good adhesion on various substrates including PP, PS, HIPS, PMMA, PC, PET, ABS,
PC/ABS and Copolyester.
TPE-1A adhesion values overmolded onto PP, PC and ABS over a wide range of melt
temperatures.

Avoid the use styrenic materials – Low shrinkage
PP grades provide an ABS alternative.
Utilize existing molds – Replace current ABS
solutions with low shrinkage PP grades and utilize
your existing molds

HOW VERSAFLEX TPEs MAKE THE DIFFERENCE IN PORTABLE SPEAKERS APPLICATIONS
GASKETS
Water and Dust Protection
- Tight housing seals with no leakage over time
Reduced Manufacturing Costs
- Eliminates sourcing and assembly steps required of
O-rings by overmolding directly onto the substrate;
strong adhesion to PC & ABS
- Faster cycle times than silicone or TPU
Design Freedom
- Injection molding TPEs in gaskets enables
complex designs in which simple O-rings would be
challenging to assemble
SPEAKER SKINS
Durable Look and Feel
- Silky feel soft touch
- Long lasting aesthetics with abrasion and UV
resistance
Reduced Manufacturing Costs
- Eliminates sourcing and assembly steps
required of silicone skins by overmolding
directly onto the substrate; strong
adhesion to PC & ABS
- Faster cycle times than silicone or TPU
Design Freedom
- Overmolding TPE removes the need for
mechanical interlocks and primers to get
silicone materials to adhere to substrates

July 19, 2007
Today there is phenomenal interest in overmolding TPEs onto rigid substrates, particularly in the consumer
product arena in applications requiring a soft touch.
